12 Days: Gift Giver

When I was writing yesterday's post, about my wishlist, I kept getting the urge to mention that I hate getting gifts.  Loathe.  Resent.  Despise.  I have always been the type of person who would rather earn things on their own than have things handed to them.

I would just rather have a few nice things than a lot of junk that I am never going to use.  I paid for my car, my camera, my laptop, and pretty much everything I own.  Yeah, my shoe collection might be a little too big to be considered "normal", but at least  I didn't have to depend on anyone else for it.  (Apparently, I have dependency issues.)

Every once in awhile, a free cup of Starbucks would be nice, but that's different than buying me a $700 pair of shoes.  Getting gifts makes me feel bad, especially when I didn't get the giver anything or gave them something that sucked in comparison.

I'm a total hypocrite when it comes to gift giving/getting though because I LOVE spoiling people with things.  You don't have enough money for lunch? Don't worry about it, it's on me.   Love to read, but you don't have a Kindle?  No problem.  (I actually got my sister a Kindle for Christmas last year.)

I grew up in a family that didn't have much, but we always helped others when they could.   I guess I have my dad to thank for that one.  He always opened our house to family friends who needed  a place to stay.  Looking back on it, some of those decisions weren't very wise, but his heart was in the right place!

When I give someone the perfect gift, it warms my heart to see how excited they get over it.  It doesn't always happen, but when it does, it's the best feeling in the world.  Completely unlike the dread I feel before opening a gift, only to be followed by disappointed after I realize the package contained a pair of socks.

So, would you rather give or receive gifts?

I'd rather give gifts! I love finding meaningful things, and I really never know what to ask for myself!
