You Just Never Know

Self Portrait

One of the reason's I loved Dawson's Creek so much when I started watching it a few months ago was the fact that he was so incredibly passionate.  He decided he wanted to be a film director at such an early age and would stop at nothing until that dream became a reality.

I saw myself in the character.  Sure, I didn't decide I wanted to be a photographer until I was 17, but still, that's pretty early and when I did decide on it, I became so passionate and wanted to learn everything there was to learn about the subject.

Then the dry spell happens.  To both, me and Dawson.   It's like you forget who you are because your entire life is consumed with this one thing.  You no longer see yourself as a person, but as your "profession," which you may or not be getting paid for.   I'm not, by the way.

Dawson went through a phase of not doing anything with a camera because he wanted to find himself again.  He took down all of his Spielberg posters and replaced them with non-movie related things.  Like the a Beatles poster and pictures of his friends after he took up photography.  The problem is, after that phase, we rarely ever see him with a video camera again.

Sure, he has since made a documentary that won an award and now he's in film school, but don't you think a film maker, who is TRULY passionate about making films should carry a camera with them at all times?  We rarely ever see Dawson do that.  In this particular aspect, I'm a little different.  I carry my camera with me everywhere, but I rarely take it out of my bag.
You never know when inspiration might strike.

Over the weekend, I read an article called "The Thing Itself" by Bill Jay.  He made a lot of good points on the subject of photography and photographers, but one thing that Bill Jay said in his article deeply saddened me.  He said, "it is rare indeed to see a photographic student carrying a camera."

In my experience, students choose the photo route, not because they want to make a lot of money like you might find in the engineer department, but because they are passionate about what they are doing.  I think it's a little strange that we aren't showing off what we are passionate about.  We should be wanting to take pictures of every little thing.  Exploring the world around us, yet we hide it.

You may not be a photographer or a film maker, but I'm sure you are deeply passionate about something.  I don't know what it is, but are you trying to hide it, or are you trying to show off your gifts?   Personally, I want to show it off.

Photo Friday Saturday!

I photobomb'd his selfie.
For the longest time, I have wanted to make Friday the day that I share some random pictures that I've taken throughout the week.  That never really happened though because well, despite carrying my camera everywhere, I've been lacking in the inspiration department. However, last weekend, we went to the beach in Santa Cruz and we had a church dinner at a Japanese Garden and I managed to pull my camera out both times!  Enjoy <3

I hope you are having a great weekend!

Blogtember: Something Old

I am really surprised I still have this picture.  It was one of the first pictures that I ever took with a "digital" camera.  The quality is horrible, because I used a crap point and shoot camera that you could probably get for $20 at the time.

That camera was given to me for Christmas one year.  It ate non-rechargeable AAA batteries like crazy.  Needless to say, I didn't use it very often! I didn't know anything about photography at the time or that it would become such a big part of my life.

This picture was only taken because my sister was having a birthday party and I wanted to document her and her friends having fun and dressing up in my clothes.  Those hats? Mine.  That necklace the girl in purple is wearing? Mine.

Now, I have a question for you!

Do all pictures have to be artistic?

Because we are surrounded by photographs everyday, we tend to pass by photographs that end up looking like the one above.  I would consider it to be a Facebook picture; a snap shot of two friends that has no meaning to the viewer except for those who were there or actually know the two girls.

Personally, I think this picture carries a lot of meaning even though it's not artistic and pretty to look at.  It holds memories of that night.  Even if you weren't there and didn't know the story behind the picture, it is contains cultural significance: iconography, fashion trends from 2006, and a sense of youth.

But seriously, who flashes the peace sign without trying to be ironic anymore!? asians

Right now, I want to make a resolution to not discredit any of my family pictures for not looking artistic enough.  Memories are memories.  It doesn't matter what they look like, but they are always going to be important.

Do you think family snapshots are just as important as artistic photographs?

Blogtember: A Self Portrait

While trying to take pictures for today's post, I realized that I hate taking pictures of myself.  Okay, I didn't just realize this, but yeah.  I think it has something to do with the fact that I'm a portrait  photographer.  Having a picture of myself that I actually like is really rare.

The wind was ferocious, whipping my hair in every direction. It kept going up my nose and in my eyes, causing my face to look weird in a majority of the pictures.  Or, I had my hand in my face, trying to bat away the strands of hair.

I really want to go back to the junior high and take pictures there again because I loved the column things I was using as a background.  Such pretty colors.

I really wish I could see a picture of myself and be happy with it. Without the self-criticizing internal comments like "Why does my arm look like that?" "What was I doing with my leg?" "I don't like that face I was making!"

These comments don't do me any good.  I try to be positive and find something that I do like about the picture, but it's harder to do that.

Then, there's the whole photographer critique.  I am my harshest critique.  If the photograph isn't up to my standards of what a good picture should look like, I probably won't like it.  So, to the people who are not photographers who take my picture, I'M SORRY! -coughboyfriendcough-

I took the selfie that I posted above.  At first, I didn't like that my hair had blown in my face as I pressed the shutter button, but while editing the picture, I grew to like it.

I really like my smile and even though you can't really see my eyes, I still love them.

I love the way the light is glowing through my hair, which is what I was kind of trying to accomplish while taking the pictures. It didn't turn out quite like I wanted, but it works.

Overall, I really like this picture of myself.  It's not one of my best, but not all of them have to be the best of the best.

How do you feel about selfies?

Do you get self-conscious when you see yourself in pictures?

Blogtember: Let's Go Shopping!

Hey everyone! I have two awesome online shops that I am currently obsessed with to share with you today as part of Blogtember!  I hope you like them as much as I do!

Bugs and Monsters

I actually met the owner of this shop on Friday during an Art Walk.  Naturally, I was attracted to her name.  I have an obsession with monsters. Then, I saw this.
source
I am dinosaur obsessed, and the print was only $5 at the booth, so I bought it.  Then, while her boyfriend was processing my order, I saw a cute little mustache pin on the table for $5 and had to get that as well. THEN I saw a sign saying that her mustache totes were $4 with a $10 purchase, so I got one of those too.   Her etsy shop only has hand painted mugs, which are equally adorable, but you can see her other creations on Flickr

PhotoJoJo

The other day, I was reading news articles related to photography and I stumbled across one that listed some of the weirdest things that are made for photography.  I don't remember where that article is, but They were pretty much all PhotoJoJo products.

Then, I went on the PhotoJoJo website and scrolled through all of their products.  Can you say Christmas List?

Here are a few things that I would want.

USB Film Roll
Just because they are amazing.   I wish we were given a choice between which film canister we wanted, because I'm pretty partial to Kodak Tri-X, the yellow one.  Any of them will do though!
Lens Cap Strap Holder
THIS! is genius.  I haven't permanently lost any lens caps yet. -knock on wood-  I tend to shove them in my pocket or my camera bag.  Having a special place to put it would be amazing.  This is one of my must haves from their store.

Camera Dial Laptop Decal
Ever since I got a MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago, I've been looking for awesome ways to personalize it.  I swear everybody's laptop at school looks the same.  When I came across this guy, I knew I wanted it immediately.  In Nikon of course.  Canon's confuse me.  Then again, I said that about Mac's...

Lens Bracelets
I actually saw a girl with these bracelets on the first day of school.  I am in love with them and need them.  I want the Nikon and Original Sets.  The Canon Set is cool too, but I can live without.

What are some of your favorite shops I need to know about?

New Blogging Era and Some Goals

Hey everyone!

At the beginning of summer, my laptop died.  R.I.P. Preston.  You are dearly missed.

Luckily, it happened after school ended, so there wasn't any problems with that.

I tried my best to "unplug" and enjoy my time away from school and responsibility, but I still ended up using my iPod Touch ALL THE TIME. (Yeah. I'm lame and don't have an iPhone or any version of a "good phone".  Just a crappy Windows phone that doesn't even have Instagram!)

Anyways, now that school is about to start again, I got a new laptop! It's a MacBook Pro and I'm absolutely smitten. I've been doing loads of homework and editing what little pictures I took over the summer.

Due to it being the beginning of a new month and a new blogging era all at once, I have decided to start off with a few goals.

September Goals

1. GET BACK INTO BLOGGING.  During my time away, I have missed blogging SO much. You don't even know.  Blogging gives me a reason to take pictures, to make goals, and it's a great way to spend your time.  Also, it's a good way to keep track of things that you have done. Personally, I hate keeping journals, so blogging is where it's at.  I am hoping to participate in Blogtember on Story of my Life.  Are you going to be doing the challenge?
2. REVAMP THE BLOG DESIGN.  I like my blog design, but I'm not in love with it.  It's time for a change.  I just don't know what I want to do with it yet.  Does anybody have any ideas? I'm open to pretty much anything right now.
3. READ THREE BOOKS FOR FUN.  You would think that I would have read more while my laptop was out of service, but you would be wrong.  I don't know what it was but I probably read a total of three books, all summer.  I started reading more once the beginning of school crept closer and closer.  I want to keep that up.  Currently, I'm reading a copy of Fight Club that my friend lent to me.
4. CLEAN MY ROOM (AND KEEP IT CLEAN).  I don't think my room is ever going to STAY clean, but it's worth a try, right? Hopefully, by the end of the month, my room will be clean. Right now, it's pretty much a disaster.  I've had embroidery thread all over my floor that I've been trying to clean up for a month, clean clothes I never got around to putting away piled on the floor and junk mail cluttered everywhere.  It's time to clean up that mess.
5. TAKE PICTURES.  I carry my camera with me everywhere, but I rarely take it out of my bag now.   I need to get back into the habit of taking pictures when I see something interesting. I love photography and I need to stick with it, especially now that I can edit my pictures.  Practice makes perfect!

Wish me luck! What are you goals for this month?

Life Lately; Week 6

Busy week has been busy...and exhausting. I think I'm STILL catching up on sleep from Friday and I've slept for at least 10 hours everyday since, but I'll tell you all about that a little later.

Obviously, I went to school from Monday-Thursday.  It was the second week and we got our first assignments.  For digital photography, we have to make pictures that represent the word "Path." Black and white- bracket our film, which means we underexpose and overexpose our pictures as well as make a good exposure.  Then, in photoshop, we have to edit an old "broken " picture.  If the picture has tears, scratches, dust, etc, we have to edit it out.

Tuesday was my great aunt's funeral.  There was not very many people, maybe about fifty? But there was TONS of food.  Like, I don't know how those people brought all that food, tons. When I left, there was over half of the food still there! I stole a box of cookies to share with my friend.  We left them on the table outside of the darkroom since we aren't allowed to bring food in and I forgot about them.  No idea what happened to them after that.

On Thursday, after class, I stayed at my friend's house waiting for the boyfriend to get off work (at 2am.)  We roadtripped all the way to Bakersfield. About a 4 hour drive.  He had to take a test so he can try to get a job at the local energy company, but they didn't have any that were anywhere close to us.  This road trip is why I've been exhausted all weekend.

The boyfriend and I planned to eat dinner with his sister on Saturday, so after returning our rental car, we drove to San Francisco.  We stopped at the beach because we were early and walked along the shore.  Eventually, his sister and brother-in-law came too. When we got tired and hungry, we went back tot he house and watched TV while eating yummy enchiladas and other mexican-ness.

Yesterday had been declared as a lazy day, but apparently, I can't be lazy by myself.  Instead of laying in bed sleeping like I wanted to, I took pictures of my cousins for my film project, went to the grocery store with my aunt and tried to catch up on homework.

Also, Sorry for the lack of pictures! I will try harder next week to take more.

TV SHOWS: 2 Broke Girls. Pretty Little Liars. Big Bang Theory.
MOVIES: Toy Story (kind of. Fell asleep)

Life Lately: Weeks 4+5

It's that time of the year again! The time to pack our bags full of text books and head off to school to learn.  It's not so bad.  I'm taking all photography related classes this semester, so it's pretty cool.  That and my best friend is in three of my four classes.

In addition to my "getting into school routine busy-ness," my great aunt passed away last Thursday, so I've been spending time with visiting family and whatnot.  It's nice to see them, but at the same time, the circumstances kind of suck.  Please keep my family in your prayers as we deal with our loss.

ANYWAYS, BACK TO WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING WITH MY LIFE.

I mentioned that the boyfriend and I went to Little Yosemite in this post.  I really love walking with him and I used the picture above in my application portfolio.  I mentioned I was applying to an art school awhile back.  I turned the application in and now I'm waiting on a response.  So excited.  Getting a scholarship and being able to attend an art school would be amazing.

The boyfriend and I also visited the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco.  It was really cool learning about how Walt created Disney and some of the characters, such as Donald Duck.  Did you know that Donald Duck was created after Walt heard the voice on the radio?  He called up the station and told them that he wanted the voice.  I thought that was pretty interesting.  There was also a miniature model of Disneyland.  The boyfriend loved showing me where everything is.  Can't wait to go.  Hopefully for my birthday!

There was a barbecue lunch with my family that we went to and after that, we went bowling for the boyfriend's brother-in-law's surprise birthday party.  I hate bowling alley lighting, but I got a few cool pictures.  Halfway through I switched to my film camera, which apparently took better pictures than my
digital with the light that I  had.  The image above is an example of what happens when your lighting sucks.  If the blur didn't hurt my eyes so much, I would actually kind of like that picture.

To end the week, there was a Super Bowl party at the boyfriend's house.  Everybody was really excited because the 49er's were playing, which is our team. We barbecued ribs and I made my sauce from scratch again.  There was so much food! The great day would have been even better if the niners had one, but there's always next year!

When I'm not at school or with family, I'm sitting in my room "doing homework".  Tonight, I literally spent about two hours looking for a new camera bag because mine is too small to fit everything I want to take to school.   I found one that I really like on Etsy.  Too bad it's over $100.  Maybe it's worth it. Isn't it adorable?

TV SHOWS: 2 Broke Girls. Pretty Little Liars. Big Bang Theory.
MOVIES: The Blind Side, Aladdin, Three Faces of Eve,

What have you been up to lately?

Pretty Amazing v. 14

Double points at DSW! I'm in desperate need of some new workout shoes, so this couldn't have happened at a better time!  Not familiar with their points system? When you become a free member, you get points toward each purchase and when you reach a certain amount of points, you get coupons! As a shoe lover, I wouldn't want it any other way!

This Photobomb'd Proposal. After completing a 5k at DISNEY, Chris got down on his knee and proposed to his girlfriend, Cristina.  If that wasn't cool enough, just look at that lady's face in the picture.  Priceless.

Lightroom. As I mentioned in my post yesterday, lightroom is da bomb diggity! This program makes editing photos so much simpler to the point where I actually WANT to do it.  Usually, I just forgo the whole editing process.  With lightroom however, I can edit them and really put my own personal touch on them.  Low saturation, anyone?

We didn't skip a gym day this week! I'm extremely happy about this. Now that I have confidence that I can reach my goal if I work REALLY hard, I have been pushing myself like no other. Plus, we've only eaten fast food once so far this week! I think that's a record.

As always, if you come across anything that you find Pretty Amazing throughout the week, do not hesitate to let me know and I will add it to next weeks post!

Have an awesome weekend!

California Adventures: Little Yosemite

Periodically, I drag my boyfriend with me to random beaches, regional parks and well, you get the idea.  I enjoy taking pictures of those types of places and I get to spend time with him while I do so.

Recently, I figured out the buttons on my camera to shoot manually.  That may seem weird, but I could never figure it out on my digital camera.   I know how to shoot manually on a film camera, but with my digital, I pretty much stuck to the Auto Landscape setting.

BUT! After reading the manual, I figured it out and I started shooting in RAW instead of JPEG.  Which is why this post is a day late.  With RAW files, you have to actually edit your pictures and then convert them and I was having troubles figuring out how to do this, but let me tell you, Lightroom is amazing and can do EVERYTHING I needed it to.

Here are some pictures that I took while we hiked through the trails of Little Yosemite to find some waterfalls.

Have you been on any adventures lately?

Monthly Goals: January 2013!

Each month, like many people, I give myself a few goals.  Some are the same each month while others are random goals that I think will help me become the person that I strive to be.

For the majority of this month, I will be on winter break, so I have a LOT of time on my hands.  With that time, I hope to strengthen relationships, get my life organized and focus on getting things accomplished that I have been putting off for who knows how long.

  1. START BLOGGING AGAIN! I used to blog a lot. At least, it felt like I did, but then my school schedule was so crazy last semester that it felt like I barely had any time for myself, let alone blogging, so that got pushed out of my life for awhile, but I miss it.
  2. FATMUMSLIM'S PHOTOADAY CHALLENGE.  I really loved doing the photo a day challenges on Instagram, but like blogging, I stopped doing them.  I want to start it again, especially because photography is kind of my "thing".
  3. CARRY MY CAMERA WITH ME.  Because I had a Barnes and Nobles giftcard, I bought this book of DIY ideas you can do with pictures.  It said that most people don't carry around their DSLR's.  I used to be that person that did though and I want to start doing that again. Having a camera with me at all times is important to me and I feel I would take more pictures if I had it.
  4. FINISH TWO BOOKS. At least two.  I'm ashamed to say it, but I have been reading The Hobbit since September. I'm only have way through.  Thank god the movie ended exactly where I left off, but that was just luck.  I really need to finish it and since I have the time at the moment, I really don't have a reason not to.
  5. DON'T COMPLAIN AT THE GYM.  I didn't go to the gym for like three weeks in December because of illnesses.  I missed it so much that today when I went, I told myself not to complain about what my boyfriend told me to do (he's kind of like my personal trainer). I want to keep that up because not only did I feel better when I left, but I actually enjoyed myself while I was doing the workouts.
  6. ORGANIZE MY BEDROOM. I don't really have many places to put things in my room, except for in my closet and under my bed, so things tend to stack up on my desk, dresser and clothes are always scattered all over my floor.  I need to get into the habit of putting away my clothes and I need to figure out where to put everything else.  Maybe donate somethings?
  7. GO THROUGH 10 MAGAZINES.  Okay, so I have this pile of magazines that I have collected so I can cut phrases out of them, but I never actually do this. I need to go through them so I can get rid of the pile and declutter my bedroom.
  8. ADVENTURE AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK.  I've declared Saturdays Adventure days, meaning I will do something fun, OUTDOORS every Saturday. This Saturday, I'm dragging my boyfriend to the beach.  Because Saturdays are Adventure days, that leaves only one more day a week to do something fun and exciting. I got this! :]

What are you goals for this month?

California Adventures: San Francisco

Hey guys! First of all, I would like to point out that I'm guest posting over on Heather's blog today about why I chose to donate to her Relay For Life fund, so don't forget to check that out!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Last Friday, I headed to San Francisco (BYMYSELF!) for a photography class field trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I took a form of public transportation that we have here called BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) because driving to SF would be RIDICULOUS. Anyways, when I arrived, I wasn't exactly sure how to get to the museum, so I put the address in my phone and followed the directions, but the directions had me going WAYYYYY out of the way (plus, I'm terrible with maps) so I got lost. Once I found out where I should be going, it was all gravy from there.

I arrived at the museum RIGHTONTIME even though I had been in SF for like an hour and we took a tour through the Cindy Sherman gallery that was being advertised.  I got free postcards and then we left. I wasn't too happy with the art in this museum. Everything seemed too similar. I would have liked to see variety in the different art styles, not just in the mediums being used, but in the colors, concepts, etc. Seriously, most of the photography gallery was filled with photos of mountains. While some were cool and all, they needed other things.

After we were done looking through the museum, my friend and I went off in search for food. It was crazy because we would walk down a street, turn the corner and the same stores and restaurants that you just passed would be right there.  I don't even know how many Starbucks or 7-Elevens we passed, but it was ALOT.  Eventually, we decided on nachos and slurpees, which we ate on some steps we found outside.

A little while after we ate, my friend had to go home, so I was left alone with the crazy people who don't wait for walk signal to cross and the drivers who block the intersection because they don't think red lights apply to them. I ended up walking around the same couple of blocks that I had originally gotten lost in, so I was kind of familiar with the area already.  I took so many pictures of buildings, it's not even funny. I just love cool, old looking buildings like in The Palace photo below!

When I decided to go home, I gave a homeless man my last two dollars and got back on BART.  Overall, I had a wonderful trip and tons of fun.   If you ever get a chance, I would definitely recommend you visit it! It would be pretty difficult to see the whole thing in one day because it is such a big city, but even bits and pieces are really cool.

California Adventures: Maternity Photos [Take 2]

My future sister in law is pregnant! (Okay, so the boyfriend and I aren't engaged yet or anything, but we are going to get married one day :]) Anyways, last Saturday, her husband had the night off work, so she wanted me to finish her maternity pictures, which I was more than happy to do. You can check out the shots from the first shoot here.

So, I cancelled all of my plans for the day and worked around her (which probably shouldn't have been done, but it was last minute).  I waited for like an hour and a half for her to call me. During this time, I read my new book, Love and Respect at some random park, ate McDonald's fries for the first time in foreverrrr, and bought a ton of scrapbooking supplies because it was 50% off at Michael's!

After the photoshoot, we went to Red Robin (YUMMMMMMM!) for dinner.

Here are some of my favorite photos from last weeks adventure.

California Adventures: Coyote Hills

When the boyfriend's sister found out that she was pregnant, plans were made for me to do her maternity and baby shower photos.  Well, we did one set of maternity photos the other day and a place near by called Coyote Hills.

The day before, I had spent the morning searching for classic Alphabet Blocks, but could not find them ANYWHERE! I went to Target and Babies R Us. Nobody had them! Except for Wal-Mart. THANK YOU WAL-MART! I had to get two packages though because I needed two T's.

Here are some photos from the shoot! I hope you enjoy them.

 Keep Adventuring!

Considering I started this challenge in the middle of July, it was messed up from the start.  I'm pretty sure none of the days were taken on the correct days and I took multiple photos on days and none on others.  You would know this if you followed me on Instagram.  However, I'm proud to say that I finished before August! All of these photos were taken in the month of July (except for the building. I could never remember to take a building picture, so I used one of late June. Oops).

NOW TO TAKE ON THE AUGUST CHALLENGE!
